Five years ago, I was coerced into, I mean encouraged to, join the Old Northside Neighborhood Board of Directors by our neighbors Travis and Hilary Barnes.  Our house was still boarded and in the initial renovation stages, but I said “yes” because even though we were not living here yet, I know the best way to get to know people and your community is to get involved.  Since then, I have served as Treasurer and now President of the ONSNA as well as Secretary of the ONS Foundation. As I look back over these five years, I am amazed at all we have managed to accomplish especially when you throw a pandemic into the mix.

During my time on the Board, launched an updated website and adopted a new logo as well as updated the bylaws.  In collaboration with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, we cleaned up the neighborhood again and again. We supported the ONS Foundation’s stewardship of the parks by sponsoring and volunteering at Plunder in the Park.  We built strong relationships with our community partners at IMPD, first in the East District and now in the North District and with our Mayors Neighborhood Advocate.

We attended meetings and discussed and discussed some more the I65/70 North Split project to make sure our neighborhood’s best interests were considered during planning and construction.  The social committee re-emerged and began hosting events to build community and then got creative when social distancing came about. We cannot forget the tireless work of the Land Use committee always stepping up to help a neighbor navigate our historic district processes as well as making sure our neighborhood is kept looking its best and in keeping with our Historic Preservation Plan.

Along the way, numerous other projects were also completed.  How we got it all done in only five years’ time with ONLY volunteers shows how committed our residents are to this neighborhood.  Special thanks and eternal gratitude to those who have served alongside me these past five years.  These accomplishments were truly a team effort.  As I finish my time, for now, on the ONS Board of Directors, I am thankful for such a great neighborhood and look forward to all that is to come. If you are interested in getting involved, I encourage you to reach out to me at president@oldnorthside.org. I would love to help you get connected and see where you can lead our neighborhood.

One last reminder, if you are not already a member, please visit www.oldnorthside.org to join the Old Northside Neighborhood Association. If you are already a member, your reminder to renew will now come based on the date you joined and not in December as it has in past years.   Our annual meeting with elections will be Tuesday, December 14th at 7:00pm at McGowan Hall at 13505 N Delaware St.  I hope to see you all there! (and some of you on the ballot.)

    Best Regards, Megan Robinson
