Happy 2022 to all the neighbors and friends of the Old Northside! I am honored to be serving as the new President of the Old Northside Neighborhood Association (ONSNA) and to continue as the President of the Old Northside Foundation (ONSF). Before we get too far into the new year, I want to take a moment to look back at all we did in 2021.

The Association’s Marketing Committee was proud to officially released the new Old Northside Neighborhood logo, which you may have seen on some of that cool swag you purchased from the Old Northside online store. The Social Committee hosted many events ranging from the Scavenger Hunt to the neighborhood Yard Hop, as well as helped to host the main neighborhood fundraising event of the year, Plunder in the Park. In 2020, as in many years past, the Social Committee also teamed up with Keep Indianapolis Beautiful to host a spring and fall clean up. Trash was picked up, strange things were found, curbs were cleaned, dumpsters were filled…and the ONS looked better as a result. I suspect some fun was also had in the process. In 2021 the Old Northside Neighborhood Association board worked diligently to revise its governance bylaws to help provide more flexibility in governance and bringing it in line with current governance standards. Also, the ONSNA membership was switched from calendar year to rolling so you may see your renewal reminders coming at a different time. The ONS blue banners are brightly welcoming people as the last of a three-year commitment for repair and replacement was completed this year. The Land Use Committee also stayed busy with their continued commitment to the preservation of the ONS. I cannot forget the work of the Board Members and neighbors who have attended countless meetings and forums on behalf of the ONS to ensure our voice is heard in the I65/70 North Split Project.

The Foundation was also very busy in 2021. Significant maintenance was conducted at the shed and pagoda in the Shawn Grove Park. Shawn Grove Park also received two replacement picnic tables, and the process was started to replace the spring toys in the preschool park area. In Great Oak Commons, the trees were fertilized and treated to help slow the progress of some disease, which unfortunately still took our trees in the beginning of this year. These updates and maintenance items would not have been possible without the funds generously given by our neighbors and friends of the neighborhood. The different ways our neighbors gave throughout 2021 was through their participation in the Wreath of Davey Jones and Winter Light completions, purchase of awesome Old Northside Swag, participation in our NAP credit program, and of course coming to the main event Plunder in the Park. The combined fundraising efforts cleared [$$,$$$]! Thank YOU! I would be remiss if I forgot to also thank our numerous volunteers that helped during the different fundraisers, seasonal plantings multiple times throughout the year in both parks and at the Central Avenue art installations, as well as the many delivery volunteers that help you get your Old Northside Swag in a timely fashion! All of that and more was done on top of the day-to-day general upkeep and maintenance of the parks.

I think it is safe to say that 2021 was a great year for the ONS. There is always room to improve so I am looking forward to what can be done in 2022. None of this would be possible without the support of our neighbors and friends. We are continuously grateful to those who dedicate time, money, and other resources to make this neighborhood the best! Best regards,

    Garry Elder
