The Month of May is upon us! Racing is in the air, people have adorned their homes with checkered flags and the faint sound of the cars running on the track can be heard from downtown.
This is the month we all jump on the race fan bandwagon - maybe you know all the drivers names, liveries, and car numbers, or you simply enjoy the spectacle, but one thing is for sure, having a tie to a driver makes the race more fun. Well this year (and the past 9 years) the Old Northside has their own driver to root for! Charlie Kimball, his wife Kathleen, and their two children, Hannah (2.5) and Gordon (1) have been residents of the Old Northside since 2012. Charlie and Kathleen are Indianapolis transplants, they moved from California 11 years ago. *Photo credit: @LAT
This year Charlie will be attempting to qualify for his 11th Indy 500! Charlie is the first licensed driver with diabetes to race in the Indianapolis 500, and has some great results to his name with 4 top-10 finishes over the years including a 3rd and a 5th. One of the ways Charlie likes to unwind during the month is a walk around the neighborhood with the family, “I love the Old Northside, the historic homes are all so beautiful and interesting, and my neighbors are the best! I love how going for a walk around the neighborhood is a social event.
My daughter especially likes going to see the historic horse posts on Broadway during our walks.” Kathleen adds, “When we were looking to move last summer after adding our son to the family, we couldn’t stand the thought of leaving the Old Northside - so we moved two blocks over from Carrollton to Broadway. We miss being so close to our old neighbors on Carrollton, but have really enjoyed building new relationships on Broadway, and we often make the trek across College to visit.” *Photo Credit:@bucherphoto
