On cold, but sunny morning in March a group of several Old Northside Foundation members and a few residents came out to plant lovely early season annuals around the fountain at Great Oak Commons. The flowers were donated by Chris Turner who lives in the neighborhood and his business beautifully maintains Great Oak Commons and Shawn Grove Park. Chris donates flowers several times a year, leads volunteer planting days, and donates lots of his time. The Old Northside Foundation oversees the two parks as well as the Central Avenue artwork. The members of the Foundation are volunteers and not only give their time to be on the board, but help out with fundraising and neighborhood beatification several times a year like the flower planting and neighborhood clean up days.

Be sure when you are out walking around the neighborhood to swing by Great Oak Commons to see the newly planted beauties. This spring the flowers that were planted were pansies, poppies, and stock. The flowers provide a beautiful backdrop to the fountain until the water can be turned on later in summer. These annuals will last to about the end of May when new summer annuals will be planted.
