Over its three decade existence the Old Northside Foundation has done several things to enhance the uniqueness and identity of our historic neighborhood. These include parks, historic street lighting, light pole banners, State of Indiana historic signs, and the Central Ave Public Art project. The latter is designed to showcase the entrance and exit from the ONS as well as symbolically bridge the two halves of the neighborhood with the bases of archways atop the limestone columns. Unfortunately over a year ago the Central Avenue column just south of Indiana Landmarks was hit by an auto: necessitating its replacement. A beautiful new column sculpted by Bloomington artist Dale Enochs just replaced it in July. Pieces of the damaged column have been strategically placed to better protect the column from northbound traffic. High upon it you will find small bronze pieces with the names of former ONS residents Booth Tarkington and Eli Lilly. Each of the other columns have historic ornaments like these. It is a restored and enhanced neighborhood beacon we can be proud of that will last many years to come.
