Join The Neighborhood Association
Donating to the Old Northside Association in Indianapolis helps preserve one of the city’s most historic neighborhoods while strengthening community programs, safety efforts, and local beautification. Your support directly contributes to protecting architectural heritage, enhancing property values, and fostering a vibrant, connected community for residents and visitors alike.
1. Advocacy and Local Representation
The association serves as a unified voice for the neighborhood when dealing with city government.
-
Zoning and Development: ONNA’s Land Use Committee reviews development proposals and zoning requests to ensure they align with the neighborhood's historic character and residents' interests.
-
City Services: The association coordinates with the city on infrastructure needs, such as road repairs, sidewalk improvements, and public safety.

2. Historic Preservation Support
Since the Old Northside is a protected historic district, many exterior renovations require approval from the Indianapolis Historic Preservation Commission (IHPC).
-
Expert Guidance: Members often have access to neighbors and committee members who are experienced in the IHPC application process.
-
Resource Sharing: The association provides resources on maintaining and restoring Victorian-era architecture, helping homeowners preserve the value and integrity of their property.

3. Community Communication
Membership keeps you "in the loop" regarding everything happening in the area.
-
Newsletters and Alerts: Members receive regular updates on neighborhood news, upcoming construction, safety alerts, and city meetings.
-
Neighborhood Meetings: Association meetings provide a forum to meet local leaders, police representatives, and city officials.

4. Social Connection and Events
One of the most tangible benefits is the sense of community fostered through organized social events.
-
Neighborhood Gatherings: ONNA hosts various events throughout the year, such as block parties, porch parties, and holiday gatherings.
-
Historic Home Tours: Many residents participate in or help organize the neighborhood’s famous home tours, which showcase the area’s unique architecture to the public.

5. Beautification and Park Maintenance
ONNA works closely with the Old Northside Foundation (a 501(c)(3) partner) to enhance the physical environment.
-
Parks: Donations, merchandise, and volunteer efforts support the maintenance and improvement of local green spaces like Shawn Grove Park and Great Oak Commons.
-
Infrastructure: The association often funds or advocates for neighborhood-specific aesthetics, such as historic-style street lamps and tree planting initiatives.
