Old Northside Neighborhood Association
(ONSNA)
The Old Northside Neighborhood Association (ONSNA) Board serves as the primary governing body and advocacy group for one of Indianapolis’ most prestigious and architecturally significant historic districts. As a volunteer-led organization, the Board is dedicated to preserving the Victorian charm of the neighborhood while fostering a vibrant, modern urban community.
The Board acts as the "connective tissue" between residents, city officials, and local businesses, ensuring that the Old Northside remains a premier place to live, work, and visit.

What the Board Does

The ONSNA Board manages the day-to-day civic health of the neighborhood through several key pillars of responsibility:

-
Historic Preservation & Land Use: The Board’s Land Use Committee (LUC) is the first point of contact for any exterior property changes. They review architectural plans, signage, and zoning variances to ensure they align with the neighborhood’s historic preservation plan before they reach the city’s Historic Preservation Commission (IHPC).

-
Infrastructure & Advocacy: The Board works closely with the City of Indianapolis to advocate for infrastructure improvements, including street repairs, sidewalk maintenance, and enhanced public lighting. They serve as the neighborhood's voice at City-County Council meetings and with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD).

-
Community Engagement & Social Events: A major part of the Board’s mission is building a sense of "neighborhood." They organize signature events, including:
-
The ONS Home Tour: A biennial showcase of the district's restored Victorian mansions.
-
Neighborhood Socials: Monthly gatherings that allow neighbors to connect and share information.
-
Holiday Events: Seasonal celebrations that highlight the unique character of the historic streets.
-

-
Beautification & Greenspace: In partnership with the Old Northside Foundation, the Board oversees the maintenance and improvement of local parks, such as Great Oak Commons and Shawn Grove Park, ensuring high-quality recreational spaces for all residents.

Who the Board Is

The Board is comprised of elected resident volunteers who live within the boundaries of the Old Northside (roughly defined by 16th Street to the north, I-65 to the south and east, and Pennsylvania Street to the west).

-
Diverse Representation: The Board includes homeowners, renters, and business owners, ensuring a wide range of perspectives in neighborhood decision-making.

-
Democratic Structure: Board members are typically elected during the annual neighborhood meeting. Officers (President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer) manage the executive functions and lead monthly public meetings.

-
Committees: Much of the Board's heavy lifting is done through specialized committees, including:
-
Land Use & Zoning
-
Safety & Security
-
Social & Hospitality
-
Communications (Newsletter and Website)
